When ZeusMiner began releasing their new scrypt based asic miners into the market, they provided a modified version of CGMiner that was capable of mining on their new hardware. Fast forward a few weeks and a joint community effort has produced a version of BFGMiner that provides an alternative to the modified CGMiner provided by ZeusMiner.
Here’s a quick description of the CGMiner and BFGMiner:
CGMiner is a multi-threaded, multi-pool software for FPGA and ASIC miners. The software project itself is open-source and the author for CGMiner is Con Kolivas. Development on the project is ongoing, but support for scrypt based algorithms ended with version 3.7.2.
BFGMiner is also a multi-threaded, multi-pool software for FPGA and ASIC miners. The BFGMiner software project is also open-source and the author for Luke-Jr. Development on the project is ongoing and includes support for a variety of devices and asic miners.
ZeusMiner used version 3.1.1 of CGMiner as their starting point before making modifications to make the software compatible with their new mining hardware. They released their modified version around the same time that their asic miners started shipping, but the initial release of the software had some problems. ZeusMiner then released an updated version of their modified CGMiner software that was more stable, but they also requested community feedback/assistance on developing a better version of software for mining with their new asic miners. The various versions of software released by ZeusMiner can be found on their website.
Two users on the forums known as Darkwinde and jstefanop took it upon themselves to develop a better version of software for mining with ZeusMiners new scrypt asics. Using the latest version of BFGMiner as a starting point, the two developers were able to make modifications to the source code to effectively port the existing version BFGMiner to ZeusMiner. This provided the scrypt mining community an alternative to the CGMiner software provided by ZeusMiner. Here is the modified version of BFGMiner.
